Percentage formulas

X% of Y = X ÷ 100 × Y. X is what percent of Y = X ÷ Y × 100. Percentage change = (new − old) ÷ old × 100. Increase by X% = Y × (1 + X ÷ 100), and decrease by X% = Y × (1 − X ÷ 100). Whole from a part = part ÷ (percent ÷ 100).

Why is the percentage change different when I swap the numbers? The change is always measured against the starting value, so going from 80 to 100 is +25%, but going from 100 to 80 is −20%.
