How Roman Numerals Work
- Add symbols from left to right: VI = 5 + 1 = 6, and XXI = 10 + 10 + 1 = 21.
- A smaller symbol before a larger one is subtracted: IV = 5 – 1 = 4, and XC = 100 – 10 = 90.
- Only six subtractive pairs are used: IV (4), IX (9), XL (40), XC (90), CD (400) and CM (900).
- A symbol never repeats more than three times in a row: 4 is IV, not IIII.
- There is no zero, and standard Roman numerals stop at 3,999 (MMMCMXCIX). Larger numbers use a line over a symbol to multiply it by 1,000.
How to Write a Date in Roman Numerals
Convert the month, day and year separately, then join them with dots or another separator. For example, 25 December 2026 is XXV.XII.MMXXVI in DD.MM.YYYY format, or XII.XXV.MMXXVI in the US MM.DD.YYYY format. Check that the format matches what you want before you get a tattoo or an engraving.
